Cookie policy

Last updated

This page explains what cookies and similar technologies this website uses, what each one does, how long it lasts, and how to change your choices. It should be read alongside the privacy policy, which covers personal data more broadly.

1What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. It lets the site recognise your browser on the next page you open, which is how a shopping basket remembers what is in it when you move from one page to the next.

This policy also covers two similar technologies that do the same kind of job without being cookies: local storage and session storage. The law treats them the same way, so we list ours here too.

2The law we are working to

In Ireland, cookies are governed by the European Communities (Electronic Communications Networks and Services) (Privacy and Electronic Communications) Regulations 2011, S.I. No. 336 of 2011, and by the GDPR where a cookie involves personal data.

The rule is simple. A cookie that is strictly necessary for a service you asked for can be set without asking. Everything else needs your consent before it is set, consent has to be as easy to refuse as to give, and it has to be as easy to withdraw later as it was to give.

3How we ask, and how to change your mind

The first time you visit, a banner appears with three plain choices: accept everything, reject everything that is not strictly necessary, or choose category by category.

Reject is as prominent as accept. Nothing beyond the strictly necessary cookies below is set until you choose, and closing the banner without choosing counts as rejecting.

To change your choices at any time, use the Cookie settings link in the footer of every page. You can also delete cookies in your browser settings at any time. Doing that will empty your basket, because the basket is a cookie.

4Strictly necessary cookies

These make the shop work. They are set without asking, because without them there is no basket and no checkout. They carry no advertising data.

5Cookies that wait for your consent

These are not needed for the shop to work, so nothing in this group is set unless you agree to it.

NameWhat it doesHow longCategory
sbjs_first, sbjs_current, sbjs_first_add, sbjs_current_add, sbjs_session, sbjs_udata, sbjs_migrationsOrder attribution. These record how you first arrived at the site, for example from a search engine, a link on another site, or a campaign, and attach that to an order so we can tell what is working. Set by the WooCommerce order attribution feature.Session, and 6 months for the first-visit recordAnalytics

Note, honestly: at the time of writing these order attribution cookies are being set on this site before consent is asked for. That is being corrected as part of the consent banner work, and this page will be updated when it is. We would rather say so here than describe a site that does not exist yet.

6Advertising and third-party cookies

We do not currently run any advertising or marketing cookies on this site. No advertising network, no remarketing pixel, no social media tracker, no third-party profiling.

If that changes, this page changes first, the category appears in the banner, and nothing is set until you agree to it.

The only requests this site currently makes to another company's servers are for web fonts from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com). Those do not set a cookie, but the request does reveal your IP address to Google. We are moving to serving those font files from our own server so that no request leaves our site at all.

7Turning cookies off in your browser

Every modern browser lets you block or delete cookies, in Settings under Privacy. The help pages for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all explain how.

Blocking all cookies will break the shop. The basket will not hold anything, and you will not be able to complete an order. Blocking only third-party cookies has no effect here, because we do not use any.

8Changes to this policy

We re-audit the cookies this site sets whenever we add a plugin, a payment provider or an analytics tool, and this table is updated at the same time. The date at the top of this page tells you when it last changed.

The short version

  • We use a small number of cookies. Most of them exist to keep your basket working.
  • We do not run advertising cookies and we do not sell your browsing to anybody.
  • Anything that is not strictly necessary waits for your consent, and you can change your mind at any time from the link at the bottom of every page.
  • Every cookie this site sets is listed below by name, with what it does and how long it lasts.

A summary of everything above, not the policy itself. The numbered sections are the ones that count.
